Motorcyclist Injured in Chico Intersection Left-Turn Crash
A 21-year-old man was injured when his motorcycle collided with another vehicle in a Chico intersection, the Enterprise-Record reported. The accident, which involved a BMW 650 motorcycle and a Honda Civic, happened Monday, November 29, 2010, just after 12 p.m. at the intersection of West Fifth and Walnut Street (California State Route 32). According to news reports, the driver of the Honda Civic, an 18-year-old Corning man, reportedly attempted a left turn in front of the motorcyclist, Ryan Clemensen, 21. The driver of the Honda Civic told police he did not see the bike.
Cause of the Butte County Accident
Chico Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision. However, based on the news reports, it appears that this accident may have been caused by the driver of the Honda Civic making an unsafe left turn into the path of the motorcyclist. Under California Vehicle Code Section 21801: "The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety."

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of about 370 bicycles today, due to a fall hazard that could result in serious injury to riders. According to the CPSC, recall involves 2011 model year Giant Anthem X 29er 1, 2 and 3 model bicycles. The bicycles, which were made in Taiwan, were sold in small, medium and large. "Giant" and the model name are printed on the bicycle. The bikes were sold at Giant Bicycle dealers in August 2010 for between $2,200 and $3,500. The CPSC says that the frame could crack at the junction of the seat post and top tube, causing the rider to fall, which could cause serious injury. 
A Woodland man was critically injured Sunday man in an accident on Highway 113 in Yolo County, the Daily Democrat reported. The accident occurred north of County Road 25A, just before 3 p.m. The victim, Roberto Santana, 50, was a passenger in a 2004 Toyota travelling southbound in the fast lane when a 2003 Honda plowed through the median and struck the left side of the Toyota. The driver of the Toyota, Alfonso Gonzalez, 63, and passenger Maria Gonzalez, 62, suffered moderate injuries. Both were taken to UC Davis Medical Center where they were treated and released the next day. Roberto Santana remained hospitalized in critical condition. Neither the driver of the Honda, Enrique Rodriguez, 20, of Dixon, or his passenger, Carlos Rodriguez, 21, of Dixon, were injured.
Four people were tragically killed early Sunday morning in a fiery head-on collision on Highway 99 west of Oroville, the CHP reported. According to news reports, Ryan Finnerty, 21, of Roseville was driving southbound in a 2006 Dodge Dakota pickup on State Route 99, near State Route 62. At the same time, around 6 a.m. Sunday, Rodrigo Ramirez, 41, of Live Oak, was driving northbound on State Route 99. For reasons still under investigation, Finnerty reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic and struck Ramirez's Ford Explorer head-on. Both vehicles were estimated to be travelling about 60 miles per hour when they collided. The impact started a fire in Finnerty's truck that spread to the Explorer when the gas tank exploded. Bystanders pulled Finnerty from his car and an 11-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man from the Explorer, all of whom suffered major injuries. When Cal Fire crews distinguished the fire, they found four bodies in the Explorer. The victims were identified as Rodrigo Ramirez, Gustavo Martinez, Gabriella Rosas and Rigoberto Martinez, all of Live Oak.
